The university of Basel, awarded Vitalik Buterin an honorary doctorate.
Ethereum’s creator can now officially use the title “Doctor”. He received the recognition from the university’s Faculty of Business and Economics. The award was presented on Friday at the annual celebration of the university’s founding – Dies Academicus.
Professor Aleksander Berentsen, stated that the main reason Vitalik was chosen for this award, was because of his contribution to the development of blockchain technology. The dean of the business faculty expressed his fascination with Buterin’s contributions and said:
“His blockchain innovations are nothing short of revolutionary. His hard work and determination have paved the way for science and industry to follow and build on to.”
Berentsen also shared that the university’s Center for Innovative Finance shares much of Buterin’s research interests such as game theory, economic incentives and governance.
The University of Basel is right to reward such a creative genius
The now doctor, was very humble and honored to receive the award and he had this to say during the announcement:
“I am honored to receive the honorary doctorate from the University of Basel. The university is the oldest one in Switzerland. Switzerland itself is known throughout the world for its innovative blockchain research.”
During the award ceremony, Buterin’s incredible jorney was taken into the spotlight. Many of the university’s researchers are still baffled how he published the article “Ethereum: “A Next Generation Smart Contract & Decentralized Application Platform”, when he was only 19 years old. With time, this article would prove to be revolutionary for the decentralization of software applications.
Even to this day, Buterin still publishes his research without any connection to a university. If we exclude the just-received honorary doctorate, he still doesn’t have any sort of academic degree and he shared publicly that he has absolutely no desire to pursue one.
Dr. Buterin can now focus entirely on ethereum’s new upgrade. The upgrade dubbed ethereum 1x, proposes to scale the platform in a very short time period.
